Practice for Looking at the Sun (2019)
single channel video, 2 minutes

I used to stare at lightbulbs as practice for looking at the sun.

I would close my eyes, and see the messages that they left for me.

The kitchen light in my childhood home would tell me about the family that had lived there before us.

Two daughters, and one son.

One day, the youngest daughter had forgotten how to speak in English.

She would say to her father “Apa yang salah dengan saya?”

(“What’s wrong with me?)

Her mother would cry.

“Stop pretending!” She would yell,

reminded of the reason she brought the family to Australia.

The sun sees more than a bulb.

It shows me nothing more than a flood of warmth.
